About StreetWise
Through the publication of StreetWise Magazine, StreetWise elevates marginalized voices and raises awareness of the realities of poverty, homelessness, and injustice while providing opportunities for individuals to earn an immediate income or gain employment. Anyone who wants to work has the opportunity to move themselves out of crisis. StreetWise provides “a hand up, not a handout.”
StreetWise is so much more than a magazine. There is no other media outlet or social enterprise like StreetWise in Chicago.
StreetWise provides supportive services that have become a much-needed safety net to vendors including: meals and pantry items, personal hygiene supplies, emergency clothing, and medical supplies, as well as access to restrooms and phone charging stations. It helps with transition to employment, assistance accessing government benefits and securing vital records, offers a stable address where people can get mail, or receive referrals for other services. It also offers emergency financial support to prevent eviction, obtain housing and cover unexpected medical expenses.
